In the Heart of the Sea: The Tragedy of the Whaleship Essex (Ryan review)

TLDR:

You should read this book. It is methodical, highly readable, and gave me a new perspective on what adventure and tough people are like.  I am not a tough person.

Spoilers:

Not everyone makes it.  Some only make it because others do not.

This was a recommendation from a friend who pointed me this way when I asked for something that was a surprising book that pulled him in.

The author, Nathaniel Philbrick has a long bibliography of rich, historical writing.  In the case of  the Heart of the Sea, he pulled from a surprisingly deep set of 1st person accounts that had survived.
